Columbia school alerts parents after student brings toy gun to school

Columbia school officials alerted parents Tuesday evening after finding a toy gun at Derby Ridge Elementary.

PrincipalKristi Shinn sent an email home to parents Tuesday. The email said aplastic, toy gun was found in a boy’s bathroom at the school and turned into the main office at dismissal time.

Shinn said the situation was investigated, the gun was confiscated and the school is taking appropriate disciplinary action.

In the email, Shinn said “I take this incident seriously, and while the student meant no harm, it violates our school safety policies.”

Shinn asked parents to review school safety polices with their children and tocheck their child’s backpack each day to make sure they are bringing to school only those items that belong there.

Shinn said, “In order for our school to remain a safe haven, we must all work together – parents, staff and community members – to provide the quality environment that our children deserve.”
