Michael Sam provides insight on his break from football

Former Mizzou defensive lineman Michael Sam says he has no regrets after he came out in February 2014. Sam tells ABC 17 he came back to Columbia to train while he is on a break from football.

“It’s been a roller coaster,” Sam said. “I’ve been trying to figure out what’s next in my life. I’ve just come to a conclusion, as I take this break from football, I want to focus on my media training.”

The former SEC Defensive Player of the Year is in Columbia, working on his masters at the University of Missouri. Sam says he will also work his way into broadcasting.

Sam says he still plans on making an NFL roster in 2016.

“[I’m] just refocused on me and what my needs are,” he said when asked why he is confident he can make an NFL team next season. He adds he will train at Mizzou to stay in shape.
