IRS warns of phone scam

ABC 17 News has been in contact with the Internal Revenue Service after multiple calls from viewers saying they received calls from someone claiming to be from the organization.

One caller told ABC 17 News the scammer said she is about to be sued by the IRS.

A spokesperson from the IRS said it will not call to demand payment or about taxes owed without first having mailed someone a bill.

The IRS will also never demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount.

The IRS recommends if you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the organization asking for money, you should call the IRS at 1-800-366-4484.
