Breakdown of severe weather chances for Friday
The latest severe threat for Friday expands the Slight Risk farther south to include most of Mid-Missouri, now including Columbia, Jefferson City and the Lake of the Ozarks. Storms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front in northwestern Missouri by early afternoon and track to the southeast through the afternoon and evening hours.
With warm, moist air already over the region and increasing wind shear, storms are expected to strengthen through the afternoon possibly producing damaging wind over 60 mph, hail over an inch in diameter and isolated tornadoes.
The tornado probability has increased to a 5% chance within 25 miles of a point for areas mainly north of I-70 and southwest to Sedalia with a lower chance farther south. (See map in related content.)
Damaging wind and large hail are the main threats with a 15% chance over much of Mid-Missouri. (See map in related content.)
