Early morning fire destroys home in Jefferson City

Jefferson City officials and the State Fire Marshal are working to find what started a fire on East McCarty Street early Sunday morning.

The Jefferson City Fire Department arrived to the scene at 1:45 a.m. According to Division Chief Jason Turner, heavy smoke was coming from the two-story home.

Firefighters went inside the building and found no one was home. Turner said the fire was contained in 30 minutes.

The home is considered a total loss due to heavy damage from the fire. Parts of the home’s walls and floors collapsed, which caused a firefighter to fall. Emergency crews transported the firefighter to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Turner said there were five fire companies on scene to put out the fire. Crews stayed on scene until the early morning to put out hidden fires within the debris and try to determine the cause.

As of Sunday morning, the cause of the fire is still undetermined. Turner said investigators are still interviewing witnesses.
