Severe Weather Possible Heading into Fall

Generally, severe weather season is termed from mid April through mid June in Mid-Missouri. However, thanks to the position of the low level winds, we can see a few days with severe weather heading into August and September. Just this year, since August 1st, we’ve had 3 days with confirmed severe reports, mainly strong wind gusts. In 2014 and 2013, we had none, while in 2007 and 2006 we had 4 days in the month of August with confirmed reports. The 10 year average tells us Mid-Missouri will see likely 3 days with severe weather in during the month of August.

Heading into September-I compiled the same statistics, and made a 10 year average. Last year, Mid-Missouri experienced 2 days with confirmed severe reports, 1 in 2013, and 3 in 2012. Notice in 2005, we had 4 days. While severe weather isn’t as common during these months, from previous years, we can expect 1 day of severe weather heading into September. -ABC17Stormtrack Meteorologist Brittany Beggs
