Car flips, crashes through yard in west Columbia
Police are still searching for those involved in a single-car crash Friday morning in west Columbia.
Columbia Police Officer Scott Lenger said the black Mazda, heading west on Broadway, ran off Wales Drive, the small section of road where Scott Boulevard and West Broadway meet.
The car hit a sign warning of the curve around 1 a.m. and eventually flipped onto a fence, knocking down two small trees in the process.
Officer Lenger said they were still trying to locate the driver and any potential passengers as of Friday morning.
A tow truck pulled the car out of the yard just after 2 a.m.
A piece of the fence stuck out of the windshield, and the front of the car was heavily damaged.
Neighbor Stacie Pottinger said she called 9-1-1 when she heard the loud sound of the car hitting the curb. A Wales Dr. resident of nearly two decades, she’s witnessed several crashes due to people hitting the curb.
Pottinger said she also did not find anyone at the crash scene after running out to check.
Marty Walker also lives on the street and he said people seem to jump the curb constantly coming around the Scott Blvd and Broadway Street turn.
He has lived there for 18 years and he said he has seen four deaths already in that exact same stretch of road.
