Mid-Missouri authorities respond to ISIS threats in the U.S. this weekend
Homeland Security is urging all Americans to be on high alert after ISIS encouraged terror attacks in the U.S. over the 4th of July weekend via social media.
In just a few days, the State Capitol grounds will be filled with nearly 50,000 people for Salute to America.
Independence Day is a holiday to celebrate, but this year police agencies are urging everyone to be on high alert for terror attacks carried out by American citizens, people who have been recruited by ISIS.
The most recent attacks ISIS has claimed responsibility for is the mass murder on a Tunisian beach, the killing of two factory workers in France, and a car bombing in Kuwait.
All of the carnage happened this past Friday.
Now, the FBI and Homeland Security are urging Americans to be aware of the possibility of mass terror attacks in the U.S.
Jefferson City Police said they are not only relying on the extra patrols, but also the public to do their part and help them, as well.
“Don’t hesitate to tell us. If something doesn’t look right to you then it probably isn’t going to look right to us, either,” said Pat McCutchen with JCPD.
McCutchen said there aren’t exactly “warning signs” to look out for, but rather use good judgement if something may seem wrong.
“So, if you see anything out of the ordinary, find an officer, call 9-11, report it to someone and we will investigate it from there.”
McCutchen said the number of additional officers will be significant and police agencies here and around the country are being told to be vigilant and prepared for the holiday weekend.
They don’t want Americans to change their plans, but to be more alert to their surroundings.
