Boone County now issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples

Boone County officials say the county is now issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

County officials made the announcement just before 11 Friday morning.

In a statement, Boone County Recorder of Deeds Nora Dietzel said”The Recorder’s office is pleased to be able to offer this important service to all of the citizens of Boone County, and assures that all applicants will receive the excellent customer service and attention that we have prided ourselves on for many years.”

The news came just hours after the United States Supreme Court announced its decision in the Obergefell vs. Hodges case.

In a landmark opinion, a divided Supreme Court ruled that states cannot ban same-sex marriage, establishing a new civil right and handing gay rights advocates a victory.
