JC Mayor stands behind Missouri pot laws

The mayor of Jefferson City has taken a stance to keep marijuana away from children.

Now, a group called Mid-MO Norml, which is pro-marijuana, is firing back, saying Tergin’s proclamation is part of the problem.

Mayor Carrie Tergin said she just wants to help keep youth in the community safe.

Tergin said it’s not about whether or not we agree with the current Missouri laws, but about following the laws in place right now.

“They should not engage in that because it is illegal. It’s simply a suggestion. It’s simply saying we have a law and as your mayor I respect that law and encourage youth to respect it. It’s about the kids, it’s about youth and that’s all,” said Tergin.

She said unlike other states, in Missouri it is illegal to use pot.

She and the Council for Drug Free Youth drafted her proclamation and that it has nothing to do with pot for medicinal uses.

Tergin hopes it opens the doors for more communication between youth and their parents to not use illegal drugs, which in Missouri, is illegal.
