Driver from Columbia crash that killed Rock Bridge student dies

The driver in a Columbia crash on Creasy Springs Road earlier this month has died.

Police say Bradley Gilman of Fulton, 27, was traveling north when his car hit the concrete curb just after midnight Sunday, May 3. Gilman was pronounced dead 5:15 p.m. Thursday at University Hospital.

On Friday, officials said they suspect both speed and alcohol played a factor in the wreck.

The car slid sideways off the road, hit a ditch and went airborne before hitting a utility pole, severing it in two. The vehicle then rolled multiple times and landed on its top.

Gilman was not wearing a seatbelt and thrown from the car. He was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.

The passenger, 18-year-old Elizabeth Upton of Columbia, died at the scene. Upton was set to receive her diploma from Rock Bridge High School this month. She graduated last semester. Counselors were at the school the next day to talk to students.
