Food Bank and Post Office collect canned goods for families in need

Hundreds of residents across Columbia donated food to the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

Saturday morning, Columbia postal carriers picked up canned goods from homes across the city. And dozens of volunteers sorted through the donations at the post office throughout the day for the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri.

The Food Bank serves 114,000 people every month in 32 counties across the state.

Mike DeSantis with the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri said if you did not leave out food Saturday, you can still donate.

“People are donating money as well as food today,” DeSantis said. “There will be a small remit envelope that people can put money in. If they forget us today, they can always write a check to the food bank later on and we’ll count it for this food drive.”

DeSantis said he estimated the drive collected thousands of pounds worth of dry and canned goods.
