Car hits stroller with 4-month-old inside

Columbia police are looking for who is responsible for hitting a mother and her daughter while crossing the street.

It happened just after 3 p.m. on Monday at the cross walk on Providence between Douglass Park and Douglass High School.

ABC 17 News spoke with the woman moments after the accident.

She said she was crossing the cross walk when a car in the far right lane was speeding and clipped the side of the stroller.

“I’m just lost in thoughts,” said Angel Smith.

Smith is thankful after her child’s stroller almost flew from her hands.

“It jerked from my hand. If I wasn’t holding it tight she would have took it with her. She would have probably took it- that is how fast she was going,” said Smith.

Smith tells me just as fast as the accident happened, the driver got away.

“She stopped and said, ‘is your baby okay?’, and I said she could have stopped because the other car was stopped and she just took off,” said Smith.

Smith said she wants this to be a lesson to all drivers so this doesn’t happen again.

“Slow down and watch the lights. Watch for people walking.” said Smith.

This accident comes as Columbia police are stepping up their efforts in enforcing pedestrian safety in the city.

Police are issuing citations to those who are not using cross walks.

Smith though was using a cross walk.

She said the driver was in a silver Honda SUV.

There were two girls in the car she said she thinks they are around their 20’s with blonde hair.
