City hall evacuated in St. Louis for bomb scare

St. Louis’ police chief says three suspicious items that forced the evacuation of City Hall for several hours have been cleared and are not a threat.

Chief Sam Dotson says the two cylinders found Tuesday morning along with a backpack or bag near City Hall entrances before the building opened for the day were assessed by a police bomb specialist and declared safe. Dotson says the cylinders were abandoned CO2 canisters.

Slay spokeswoman Maggie Crane says there were no known written or verbal threats.

Three busy streets near City Hall were closed but later reopened.

New members of the 28-member Board of Aldermen were to have been sworn in Tuesday inside City Hall, but the ceremony was shifted to a nearby park.
