JC community members concerned over historic street name change

Tuesday evening, members of Jefferson City’s black community held a town hall meeting to discuss the possibility of changing the name of Lafayette Street to University Avenue.

More than two dozen residents came out to petition the city to stop Lincoln University’s request to change the name.

Residents told ABC 17, Lafayette has historical significance, and changing it would remove one of the last remaining symbols from their community.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will meet Thursday to decide if the name-change should be sent on to the full council.
