Cyber Monday and holiday weekend sales
As the first weekend of holiday shopping comes to a close, statistics for who shopped online versus in store, are already coming out.
Carrie Tergin owns Carrie’s Hallmark off High Street downtown Jefferson City and says that her store has been very busy the last few days. Tergin says, “We had great crowds, the weather was perfect, we couldn’t have asked for a better day and shoppers were out and they brought their familes and friends and it was just a great time to get out and see what the local stores had to offer”.
Ken Amend, owner of Divinity Religious gifts says that overall sales are up, but that he didn’t see an influx of shoppers in his store this weekend. “Our retail sales are up about 2.4% percent over last year, I’m in a niche market and I’ve been here this week 16 years, so I can see the trend and where it’s going”, says Amend.
According to the National Retail Federation the number of people that went Black Friday Shopping this year compared to last year went down about 7% percent.
However Shoppertrak reports that 27% more people went out shopping on Thanksgiving Day.
Although online sales have already increased since last year. Spending 14% percent more on Thanksgiving and 10% more on Black Friday.
“Hallmark did come out with a new movie, the North Pole Movie so they are seeing that and finding the products in the store so it’s really referring people back and we love that, I think all the businesses do, it’s okay to look online but we sure love it when they shop and come in and support the local businesses”, says Tergin.
With predictions that Cyber Monday sales may be down, many retailers have chosen to spread out the deals, from Thanksgiving to Christmas.
