Crime statistics at student housing complexes

The latest shooting at a student housing complex happened at the Cottages Sunday morning.

Police said a large party was going on when someone fired multiple shots in the parking lot.

No one was hurt, but a bullet went through a nearby window and four cars were also hit.

Some students who live in the area told ABC 17 News this shooting is unsettling and does not make them feel safe.

Police said they had no cooperation in the investigation and there’s no suspect information.

While this may be the first shooting for the Cottages, that is not the case for Aspen Heights.

Since August of this year there have two shootings at Aspen Heights.

“The shootings are more surprising to me. The break ins not so much,” said Christina Rosasco, a freshman at the University of Missouri.

The east campus neighborhood saw a string of break-ins last year.

Since September, three rapes were reported in that area.

“I would assume that more of the dangerous crime would be downtown. I mean that just something you’d assume,” said Caileigh Peterson, a junior at the University of Missouri.

However, according to 911 numbers that is not the case for student housing.

The majority of calls come for the complexes in southeast Columbia.

Aspen Heights had the most calls by a landslide at 86 emergency calls since August.

The Cottages have 19 calls.

The Den has 25 calls.

The Domain off Highway 63 has had 16 calls.

The Grove has 3, and the Lofts downtown has had 29 calls.

“If I was choosing between the Grove and Aspen Heights with the numbers, I would probably go with the Grove, just to try and make it easier on myself,” said Christina Rosasco, a freshman at the University of Missouri.

These numbers show no matter where in Columbia, crimes are happening all over- something students say they are aware of.

“I think there are safety problems everywhere you just have to be safe yourself,” said Caileigh Peterson, a junior at the University of Missouri.

Some students told ABC 17 News they would like to see more done about the issue.

“I think most apartment complexes should just tighten up a little bit on security,” said Christina Muscarella, a junior at the University of Missouri.
