Police identify Mid-Missouri murder victim, suspect

On Thursday, police identified a suspect and a murder victim found shot to death in Mid-Missouri.

Investigators say Donald Bateman, 68, is currently is charged with first degree murder, for the shooting death of Antoine Johnson, 43, in California, Mo.

Police responded to a disturbance call at 505 W. Main Street at around 8:10 Wednesday night. Johnson’s wife told police that her father, Bateman, shot her husband in the stomach.

Johnson later went to St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City, where he died.

Police said both Johnson and Bateman lived at the home and the shooting was the result of an argument. Bateman and Johnson had been working on a water heater when they began fighting.

Court documents said Bateman had been drinking through the last part of the day.

In an interview with police, Bateman said Johnson threatened to beat him up. Bateman said he became upset at the threat because he is a disabled, double-amputee in a wheelchair, and fired the gun at Johnson when he ran up to him.
