Laws for fireworks usage in Cole County
2014 is the first year Jefferson City does not allow the sale of fireworks within the city.
However, right outside of town, tents are popping up selling everything from sparklers to mortar shells. Some of these locations are new for some businesses that used to be based in town.
When most people think of the 4th of July, they think of our independence, fun family time, and of course setting off fireworks.
“This is what we celebrate, fireworks is the core of America. We’re all kids at heart and we all love it, so that’s why I love selling them,” said Mike Theissen of Helsel Fireworks.
Theissen works for Helsel Fireworks off Apache Flats Road and said they just recently changed locations.
“You’re no longer allowed to sell fireworks inside the city limits of Jefferson City, so we’re just outside the limits,” said Theissen.
7 years ago, Jefferson City officials passed a law that required all fireworks to be bought and set off outside city limits.
Several older businesses were grandfathered in and told they must find a new location.
Now driving through the Capital City you won’t see a single tent out selling these mini explosives.
These are all measures to try to improve safety within city limits.
“We want everyone to celebrate the 4th of July, but we want them to do it safely. We want it within the bounds of the law, but the main thing is common sense. Try to appreciate your neighbor, the fact that they’ve got to work or whatever so everyone can have a good time,” said Captain John Wheeler of the Cole County Sheriff’s Department.
Theissen said after it rains is typically the best time to shoot off fireworks because the ground is wet, meaning less of a chance of something outside catching on fire.
“We’ve had a lot of people out, the weather has been good, it’s been wet, we got some rain last night so people aren’t afraid to be out shooting them off.”
Other safety precautions include keeping a water bucket, first aid kit, and phone nearby in case something were to happen.
