AT&T customers targeted by phone scams

New phone scams could be targeting AT&T customers.

These scams are designed to get your personal information or upload malware to your wireless device or computer.

According to the Better Business Bureau, one scam involves consumers receiving calls from scammers posing as AT&T technical support, telling them that their email account may have been compromised and included a phone number to reach AT&T tech support. However, when placing that call, the caller is told told the company that they’ve reached provides independent tech support for AT&T and are directed to a fake website.

Another involves consumers receiving phone calls or text messages telling them all they need to do is to complete a survey in order to receive anywhere from $100 – $600 which would be credited to their AT&T account.

In each of these scenarios, consumers are directed to a fake website resembling the real AT&T website, with addresses like att620.com, or goatt320.com. The scammers want access to your AT&T account to obtain personal information, or to load malware to your wireless device.

These scams affect more than AT&T customers. The Better Business Bureau has received similar complaints in the past about scammers calling and posing as representatives from large companies such as Microsoft or Netflix.

If you suspect a phone call offer is fake, don’t respond directly to that phone call. Instead, call the company and see if the call is legit. And if the phone call directs you to a a website that could be fake, don’t visit that website. If you receive a text that may be fake, don’t click on any links contained in the text. Report fraudulent AT&T calls to abuse@att.net.
