Road crews busy keeping routes safe for holiday travelers

This weekend millions of people across the county are traveling home for the holidays, just in time for a winter storm to hit mid-Missouri.

With dangerous weather conditions in the forecast and more people on the roads than usual, road crews are working extra hard to keep the priority routes from freezing.

Saturday evening Missouri Department of Transportation officials told ABC 17 News that the pavement temperatures were at or below freezing. They plan on being out on the roads through the night.

Columbia Public Works told ABC 17 News they are treating residential streets, even though there has not been their required 4 inches of snow.

Boone County Public Works has their full crew out Friday night through Saturday night. They told ABC 17 News that the anti-icing treatments are not working for the gravel roads so to be careful there.

Cole County Public Works started pretreating roads Friday morning and treated them again Saturday evening.
