Experts: Colored contacts are a fright for your sight

Non-prescription colored contacts may seem like a fun accessory to complete your Halloween costume, but local optometrists and the Food and Drug Administration warn that the outcome could be scary.

Experts said wearing these contacts for even a night of Halloween fun could lead to a lifetime of vision loss.

Dr. Sahba Jalali, a local optometrist, said people wear these contacts at their own risk.

“If they lose their eyesight, I don’t think any Halloween party is worth that,” he said.

Damage that can lead to permanent vision loss can actually happen instantly, depending on what’s on your fingers when you put the lenses in your eyes.

“There’s a bacteria that can cause blindness in 24 hours once they invade the eyes,” Dr. Jalali said.

And if you wear the non-prescription contacts for the length of a Halloween party or trick-or-treating, you are susceptible to scratches and sores on the surface of your eye.

Medical experts recommend getting a prescription and only wearing FDA-approved and doctor-prescribed lenses, even for your Halloween costume.
