MoDOT: New Highway 54 pavement to improve safety

The Missouri Department of Transportations says the curve at U.S. Highway 54 and Madison Street is known to be dangerous and that is why they are implementing a fix to reduce accidents.

“The median barrier and the guardrail has been hit several times,” said Terry Imhoff, MoDOT engineer.

A substance called a High Friction Surface Treatment was put in the location Sunday and Monday in hopes of reducing crashes.

The $84,000 treatment consists of small pieces of gravel that are attached to the road with epoxy.

“That’s going to improve the friction at this location and help the vehicle grip the pavement better through this curve underneath the Madison overpass,” said Imhoff.
