Arrest made in alleged MU campus rape
A man accused of rape on Mizzou’s campus is behind bars tonight.
A woman came forward Tuesday saying she was sexually attacked near east campus.
Campus police arrested Paul Vaughan as a suspect in the attack.
The victim says she knows her attacker; that is how authorities were able to make the arrest.
Campus police say it is more common for victims to know their attacker.
Four girls who live in an apartment building off the same street didn’t know anything happened.
“I usually feel pretty safe around here. I’ve never felt scared walking home, everything is pretty lit up,” one girl said.
They said they know most of the people living around them, which makes them feel safer.
But police say the victim knew her alleged attacker.
“It is something that is addressed very strongly on campus in a preventative way, trying to provide education because it’s not the stranger rapes where someone jumps out of the bushes in college campuses, it’s typically an acquaintance situation,” said Brian Weimer, MU police department.
Vaughan is in the Boone County Jail tonight.
