Tractor trailer accident snarls Interstate 70 traffic
A tractor trailer crash backed up traffic for hours on Interstate 70 in Columbia.
Just after 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, emergency crews were called to the accident on the eastbound lanes of I-70 at the exit ramp to Highway 63.
The Columbia Fire Police Department says the tractor trailer — carrying automotive batteries — struck the concrete railing on the passing lane, jack-knifed and crossed both eastbound lanes before ending up in a ditch.
Due to the crash, emergency officials had to temporarily close the exit ramp to Highway 63. By 4:30 p.m., crews were able to clear the scene and reopen the lanes to traffic.
The driver was transported to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters say both fuel tanks ruptured, spilling about 200 gallons of diesel. Crews were able to set up a dam and absorbent booms to contain the fuel.
