Jefferson City couple indicted for student loan fraud

Two Jefferson City residents were indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday for allegedly committing student loan fraud.

Lisa K. Baker, 52, and David W. Baker, 56, were charged with 11 counts of bank fraud for reportedly engaging in a scheme to receive more than $100,000 in student loans.

According to the indictment, the Bakers applied for student loans using another person’s name between July 2005 and Sept. 2007. Prosecutors say that person — identified only as “RLB” — did not have knowledge of the situation nor did that person give consent to the couple.

The indictment says the couple filled out the loan applications and forged the signature of “RLB” multiple times. It also states the couple, not “RLB,” used the money.

The Bakers are facing 11 counts of bank fraud for a series of 11 fraudulent loans, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Those loans total $109,000.
