Columbia police arrest 6-year-old at elementary school

Columbia police took a 6-year-old Mill Creek Elementary School student into custody on Friday.

Officers were called to the school on W. Nifong Blvd. Friday afternoon, according to Ofc. Latisha Stroer.

Stroer says the boy became angry and began throwing and breaking items in a classroom. No other students were harmed.

The child will not be charged with any criminal wrongdoing because of how young he is.

Columbia Public Schools superintendent Dr. Chris Belcher says the school had the situation under control, but sources tell ABC 17 News the child’s mother wanted police to handle the incident.

Belcher said the incident was a good reminder of why the teachers are so well trained to be able to handle any incident.
