2 killed in small plane crash near St. Louis

Two people are dead after a small plane crash early Saturday morning near St. Louis.

According to affiliate KTVI, a single-engine aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from the Spirit of St. Louis Airport in the Chesterfield Valley.

St. Louis County police say the plane crashed into a tree line about a half-mile from the end of the runway just before 5 a.m.

Authorities say the victims, a 41-year-old male pilot and a 7-year-old girl, are from St. Louis County. The flight plan says they were bound for Texas before continuing onto Arizona.

The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the crash. No immediate cause was given, but police point out there was thick fog in the area at the time of takeoff.
