Report: Missouri has 8th best highway system in the nation

Missouri has made the top ten list of the best state highway systems in the nation.

A highway report released Tuesday shows Missouri ranked eighth in overall highway performance and efficiency.

The Show-Me State ranks first in rural interstate pavement conditions, 16th in urban interstate congestion, 18th in urban interstate pavement condition, 28th in fatality rate, and 37th in deficient bridges.

The report says Missouri is the seventh largest state-administered system with more than 33,000 miles under state control.

The report from the Reason Foundation uses 11 indicators to rank states, including highway expenditures, interstate and primary road pavement condition, bridge condition, urban interstate congestion, fatality rates and narrow rural lanes. The study is based on spending and performance data submitted by the state highway agencies to the federal government.
