Missouri returns nearly $40 million in unclaimed property

The Missouri State Treasurer’s office is breaking records this year.

According to Treasurer Clint Zweifel, the office has returned more than $39.5 million in unclaimed property to 135,000 accounts for the 2013 fiscal year.

Those totals broke the records for property and accounts returned.

Last year, $38.2 million in unclaimed property was returned to 130,000 account owners.

“Breaking records is great, but what really matters is getting this money back to the individuals, businesses, local governments, schools and religious organizations it belongs to,” Treasurer Zweifel said.

The Treasurer’s Office still has more than $760 million in unclaimed property for 4.5 million account owners. More than 60 of those accounts have more than $100,000.

In Mid-Missouri, which covers Audrain, Benton, Boone, Callaway, Camden, Cole, Cooper, Dent, Gasconade, Howard, Maries, Miller, Moniteau, Montgomery, Morgan, Osage, Pettis, Phelps, Pulaski, and Saline counties, the state has $27.3 million in more than 307,000 accounts.

Since 2009, the treasurer’s office has returned over $150 million.
