Kirkwood company makes bid for Mid America Brick

A bankrupt Audrain County brick maker has a potential buyer.

According to court documents filed Thursday, Shamrock Proppants of Kirkwood has bid a little more than $1 million for the assets of Mid America Brick & Structural Clay Products, LLC.

The bid was scheduled to go before a federal judge in St. Louis one week later, on June 21.

Mid America Brick filed for bankruptcy in February 2013 in the Eastern District Bankruptcy Court of Missouri, less than three years after taking over the historic A.P. Green facility in Mexico, Mo.

Bankruptcy documents show the company claimed to be $16 million in debt at that time, but still operating.

The City of Mexico and the Missouri Department of Economic Development are listed as creditors. The city was on the hook for $1.4 million in the deal, the state was owed $1 million.

ABC 17 News called all local and state stakeholders in the case Wednesday afternoon.

The state attorney general’s office responded saying only, “The Attorney General’s office is doing everything possible to protect the Missouri Department of Economic Development’s claim in the bankruptcy court proceeding.”

In the motion filed last Thursday, the court sets guidelines for other bidders. If more than one bidder other than Shamrock comes forward before July 11, the acquisition of assets could go to auction on July 26.

A representative from Shamrock Proppants declined comment on the bid Wednesday. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported last week that the manufacturer said it wanted to use the plant to make clay proppants, which are used in oil and gas production.
