Attorney general requests 10 day extension in Ryan Ferguson’s petition for a Writ of Habeas Corpus

Last week, Missouri attorney general Chris Koster’s office requested a 10 day extension to review a petition to release Ryan Ferguson.

The office cited a “heavy workload.”

The Western District Appeals Court granted the extension to the attorney general to submit their answer, which is due May 20.

On Jan. 30, Kathleen Zellner, Ryan Ferguson’s attorney, filed a petition for a Writ of Habeas Corpus.

The state was originally given until Feb. 26 to respond to the request.

They requested an extension and the state was supposed to respond by March 5.

In 2005, Ryan Ferguson was convicted for the 2001 murder of Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt.

Ferguson and Chuck were Rock Bridge High School juniors who snuck into a bar on Halloween night in 2001 and both said they left around 1:15 a.m.

There was no physical evidence tying Ferguson to the crime, but was convicted based on two witness testimonies.
