NMU President Responds to Death

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) – Northern Michigan University’s president has lauded students and employees for trying to save a freshman on the school’s soccer team who drowned after a team workout.President David Haynes recognized their efforts Friday during a board meeting.Haynes cited the student who spotted 18-year-old Arianna Alioto’s body Nov. 30 in the pool at the school’s Physical Education Instructional Facility in Marquette. He also praised a fitness manager who pulled her from the water.The school this week released information from its ongoing investigation. Officials say nobody saw or heard Alioto in distress. There’s no indication of foul play and autopsy results are expected in January.The 5-foot-3 midfielder from Columbia, Mo., had been recovering from a knee injury.
