Columbia business raises $655 for disadvantaged University of Missouri students
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Sawdust Studios, a Columbia business gave the community an opportunity to show their creativity and also help raise money for a student program at the University of Missouri. A total of $655 was raised.
The studio held a holiday event at its community woodworking shop from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at 2207 Nelwood Dr Unit 105, Columbia, MO 65202.
The event was a family-friendly event and community members made handcrafted holiday gifts by making a $5 donation by cash or card. Food, drinks, and supplies were also provided.
The business plans to donate the money from the event to the TRIO student program. The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
TRIO includes several programs targeted to serve and assist low-income first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities in the process to achieve academic success.
The University of Missouri TRIO Program serves over 600 undergraduates every year, according to the program's website. MU’s TRIO Program offers academic, financial, social, professional, leadership development, and cultural competency services.
Cruz Chavez, owner of the studio says the 2022 holiday season is the second year for the event. Chavez said he anticipates raising at least $1,500 to donate to the TRIO organization.
Sawdust studios says they plan to have a holiday event every year going forward.
