Sierra blizzard provides ammo for critics of US Postal Service plan to downsize mail hub in Nevada
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A U.S. Postal Service plan to downsize a regional mail hub in Reno and move package and letter processing to Sacramento, California, has officials in Nevada worried about delays and mail-in ballot handling. They say the blizzard that dumped up to 10 feet of snow atop the Sierra and shut down all major highways for three days is a prime example of a potential disaster in a state where every registered voter can return a ballot by mail. Nevada’s secretary of state and members of the congressional delegation say mail service could be delayed even in the best of weather. A Postal Service spokesperson says plans aren’t final but that Nevada mail still would be delivered within two days.
