2 men on water scooters killed by Algerian forces after crossing maritime border, Moroccan media say

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — Moroccan media reports say Algerian forces killed two men and detained a third after they strayed across Morocco’s maritime border with Algeria on water scooters. The French government says one of the victims was French, as was the detained man. The border has long been closed because of tensions between the two North African neighbors. The brother of one of the men killed told a Moroccan news website that they were riding personal watercraft off Morocco’s coast on Tuesday when they ran low on gas. He says they drifted into Algerian waters and armed forces on a speedboat pulled up and fired. Algerian police and coast guard officials did not respond to requests for comment.
