California city nixes desert surf lagoon plan amid drought

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California desert city has rejected a proposal for a surf lagoon amid community concerns about drought. The La Quinta City Council on Wednesday voted voted unanimously against a zoning change that would have permitted construction of the Coral Mountain project, including a 12-acre wave pool, 600 homes and a hotel with up to 150 rooms. The pool would need 18 million gallons of water, although developers said it would use far less water than local golf courses. At least four other wave pools or lagoons are proposed for the region around Palm Springs.
