School of the Osage contacts authorities about student’s social media comments

School of the Osage said it was alerted to concerning comments made by a student on social media Wednesday night.

The district said it received a tip on its new Be Safe system and immediately contacted law enforcement.

School officials said they collaborated with law enforcement Wednesday and early Thursday morning and the situation was addressed.

In a Facebook post, the district said students and staff were not in danger.

“Keeping our students safe is a our top priority and we are thankful for the support and assistance from our students, staff, families, and community,” the post said. “We understand that these statements often spur questions. However, due to student confidentiality this is the only information available for release.”

The “Be Safe” system was launched at School of the Osage on Jan 7 with the goal of providing students and members of the public a direct line of communication to school leaders.

“We wanted to have a way for parents, teachers, community, but essentially students to feel like they could, at any time, report a safety concern to us,” deputy superintendent Laura Nelson said.

The website’s function includes a page that allows users to submit “quick tips,” by inputting certain information including the school where the incident occured, the type of incident and additional details about it.

“In a world of ‘see something, say something,’ this technology helps us make that possible for students when they don’t have immediate access to us physically,” Nelson said.
