Police: Nothing new to report in week-old Columbia shooting
Police are still looking for a suspect in a week-old deadly shooting in central Columbia.
“If anyone has any information we highly encourage them to call 875-TIPS,” Columbia Police Department spokesman Jeff Pitts said. “You can remain totally anonymous to give us information to help us find a suspect.”
Officers were sent to a shots heard call on West Worley and Oak streets at about 3 p.m. last Wednesday. Police found roughly a dozen gun shell casings and 30-year-old Chase Hayes wounded. Hayes got emergency medical treatment, but died as a result of his injuries.
This shooting was the ninth homicide in Columbia this year and has residents questioning the safety of the city.
“Can’t turn the news on without hearing about a shot, shots fired, police investigating shots and people getting killed,” said resident Gregory Silvey. “Columbia’s just become like the wild wild west.”
Silvey said he’s worried about everyone in the community because he said bullets don’t have a name on them and could hit anyone.
“It could be just somebody just walking down the street and not have nothing to do with anything and catch a bullet,” Silvey said.
Police have released little information about the incident. No description of a shooter or any vehicles involved in the incident have been made public, though the shooting happened in the daylight hours.
