JCPS leaders consider change in start time, boundary line procedures

Students, teachers and families in Jefferson City Public Schools could see a number of differences by the start of the next school year.

The district’s board of education agreed on new school boundary lines in September to accommodate the addition of Capitol City High School, which is set to open for the 2019-2020 school year.

The district’s boundary lines had not changed for the at least the last 20 years, JCPS spokeswoman Ryan Burns said.

The board is considering changing the policy on boundary lines to allow for more regular review and change. Board member Ken Enloe has proposed assessing any changes to the boundary lines every few years. The item was on Monday’s board agenda, but no action was taken.

The board is also considering changing school start and release times across the district.

Currently, elementary and secondary schools have staggering start times between 7:50 and 8:50 a.m.. The proposed changes, which did not receive a vote Monday, would have elementary schools start at the same time, as well as secondary schools. Those two start times would be one hour apart.

The conversation on the proposed start time changes are expected to continue at the district’s policy committee’s next meeting.
