Mechanical equipment malfunction causes fire at City of Columbia landfill
UPDATE 8:15 a.m.: Columbia fire officials said that the fire at the city’s landfill started because of a mechanical equipment malfunction Saturday morning.
Officials said they were called to the 5700 block of Peabody Road around 4:30 a.m. for a fire alarm.
When crews first arrived, they didn’t see any smoke or fire on the outside of the building, but when they headed inside, they saw heavy smoke.
Firefighters found fire in a piece of a mechanical equipment, and were able to contain the fire to that unit.
The fire marshal’s office said the cause of the malfunction in the equipment that caused the fire is still under investigation.
ORIGINAL: Columbia Fire crews put out a fire at the city’s landfill.
Crews were called to the scene in the 5700 block of Peabody Road just after 5 a.m. Saturday. Columbia Fire crews on the scene said there was heavy smoke inside the Biolpant building.
Fire crews said it took approximately 10 minutes to get the fire under control. Three engines, a ladder truck, a heavy rescue truck and an ambulance responded to the scene to help put out the flames.
The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. No one was inside the building at the time.
