Room at the Inn prepares for weekend opening

The Room at the Inn is preparing for its first weekend of sheltering some of Columbia’s homeless population.

The program will begin taking people in at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Shepard Boulevard starting at 7 p.m. Sunday. People are allowed to stay overnight until 7 a.m. The shelter will be open at various churches from Sunday until March 2, 2019.

You can view the program’s full schedule here.

The program receives $39,700 from the city of Columbia.

The bitter temperatures in November kept many local shelters full. Data from the National Weather Service shows last November was the third-coldest November since records started in 1889. Steve Jacobs, a representative of the men’s shelter St. Francis House on Rangeline Street, said the shelter has regularly had people staying in its 10 available spots throughout the cold months.

The city’s official overnight shelters are:

New Life Evangelistic Center (for men) at 901 Wilkes Blvd. – 573.875.0603 Rainbow House (for children/youth) at 1611 Towne Drive – 573.474.3558 Salvation Army Harbor House at 602 N. Ann St. – 573.442.1984 St. Francis House (for men) at 901 Range Line St. – 573.875.4913 True North (for victims of domestic violence) – 573.875.1369 Welcome Home (for veterans) at 2120 Business Loop 70 East. – 573.443.8001
