Looming water rate increase sparks concern

Columbia will see water rate increases starting June and some local groups say it could have a devastating effect.

The increases will pay for a $ 43 million bond that passed in August that included a gradual 11 percent increase through 2022.

The Community Garden Coalition said the water rate increase could be detrimental to its work.

“We were looking at a 45 percent increase in our bill and so that’s quite a bit of money for our organization,” group treasurer Bill McKelvey said.

Group members went to the Water & Light Advisory Board meeting Wednesday to recommend an exemption for organizations such as theirs.

“It could take a lot more money to produce food in our community garden setting or for donations,” McKelvey said.

Without the help, they may have to raise more money or cut down in size, members said.

The Water & Light board agreed to take those concerns into consideration as it forms its recommendation for the city council.

Water & Light Advisory Board Chairman Scott Fines said it’s always a concern that other groups could come forward expecting an exemption as well.

“It’s always a concern with every policy that there will be unexpected repercussions but you have to prepare for that,” Fines said.

Other concerns were brought up about those with fixed incomes.

Ultimately, the city council will make the final decision.

Water & Light staff are putting together a proposal to bring to the council for a public hearing in January.
