Columbia man arrested after dispute leads to standoff with SWAT team

Columbia police arrested a city resident around 4 p.m. after an hours-long standoff with police at a home on Godas Circle.

Jaque Deron Cox, 29, was arrested and charged with domestic assault after surrendering to the Columbia Police’s SWAT team, according to a department news release. Cox had outstanding felony warrants for assault and possession.

According to Columbia Police Department spokesman Jeff Pitts, police were dispatched to the residence on Godas Circle at 12:30 p.m. in response to a domestic dispute. Neighbors tell ABC 17 News a group of people were arguing outside the home before police were called.

When officers arrived, they found a woman who had been injured in the dispute, and Cox was locked inside the home. Police say no one else was inside with him. After Cox refused to leave the house, the SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene.

After several attempts by negotiators, Cox still refused to leave the home.

The Bearcat then rammed the front door of the home, but no officers entered. Cox then walked out with his hands up and allowed officers to take him into custody.

It’s not clear if Cox was armed in the home, or how serious the woman’s injuries were before she was taken to the hospital.
