Benton County deputy accidentally shoots self

A mid-Missouri sheriff’s deputy was flown to a Columbia hospital after he accidentally shot himself during shooting exercises Monday.

Benton County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Jeff Canfield shot himself in the lower torso during night range qualification at about 5:25 p.m. Monday, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

The sheriff’s office said the bullet did not hit any vital organs and Canfield was expected to recover. No details were released about how the accident happened.

An MU Health spokeswoman said Canfield had been treated and released from the hospital.
