MUPD warns out-of-state drivers of license plate thefts

The University of Missouri Police Department is warning out-of-state students of a person, or people, who are stealing out-of-state license plates.

According to MUPD public information officer Sara Diedrich, license plates are being stolen more frequently.

“It’s something we’ve noticed within the last month and a half,” Diedrich said. “There appears to be a pattern.”

Out-of-state license plates have been reported stolen from on-campus parking garages and parking lots. Campus parking facilities are monitored by officers as part of their routine while they patrol campus. At this time, Diedrich said campus police do not know the motive for why the plates are being stolen.

Diedrich said anyone leaving vehicles on campus needs to take note before they leave.

“With Thanksgiving break coming up, we ask if you’re leaving your vehicle on campus to take note of license plates before you leave and after you come back,” Diedrich.

The number of license plates stolen has not been released. An investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made so far.
