NTSB: Most deadly Columbia pedestrian crashes at night

Data from the National Transportation Safety Board shows that most of the 13 deadly Columbia pedestrian crashes in the last decade happened at night.

The NTSB released a decade-long study into pedestrian crashes across the country, finding a steady increase in the frequency and number of deaths since 2010. The report said that 16 people died every day in a pedestrian-involved car crash in 2016 – the highest rate so far this decade.

Thirteen crashes have happened in Columbia between 2007 and 2016 that killed someone. Seven of them took place during dark conditions, while the other six took place in daylight. An additional two others took place at night since 2017, while another two happened in the day, according to previous ABC 17 News reporting.

The report noted that 74 percent of all traffic deaths in 2016 occurred in dark conditions. Thirty-nine percent of those crashes had some sort of lighting nearby.
