Crowds head to Columbia for Mizzou homecoming

Thousands of people will head to Columbia this weekend for Mizzou’s homecoming celebration.

ABC 17 News checked back in with city officials about the new lighting downtown aimed at deterring crime. We told you in late September when the new high intensity lighting was installed and testing had begun.

A city spokesperson said he reached out to the Columbia Police Department for an update, but ABC 17 News has not heard back.

We also inquired about the use of downtown security cameras. Back in August, after a series of shootings, Columbia Police Chief Ken Burton said the department was working with businesses to gain access to security cameras downtown. ABC 17 News will update this story if we hear back.

We also reached out to half a dozen hotels in the area-they were all full or nearly at full capacity.

Mizzou’s homecoming parade will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, and the Mizzou football team will host Memphis on Saturday at 3 p.m.
