Gas line break leads to Lincoln building evacuation

UPDATE 2:05 P.M.: University officials said the campus returned to normal operation at about 1 p.m.

ORIGINAL:Lincoln University officials have evacuated a building after a gas line break next to the campus.

The Jefferson City Police Department warned of the line break at Dunklin and Chestnut on Twitter, saying emergency crews were on the scene.

Due to a gas main break please avoid the area of East Dunklin and Chestnut. Emergency crews are on the scene.

A Lincoln spokeswoman said Martin Luther King Jr. Hall, an academic building, was being evacuated. She said city officials told Lincoln administrators that city crews were working on stormwater repairs and hit an unmarked gas line.

Ameren Missouri has workers on the way to assess and fix the leak. It wasn’t clear whether or how it was affecting Ameren gas customers.
