National Guard member suffers injuries after shooting

A member of the national guard were injured Monday after someone shot through the windshield of a truck at the National Guard Training site in southwest Macon.

When the Macon County Sheriff’s Office received notice of an active shooter, it was reported a member of the National Guard had been shot in the face and was still being shot at. Macon county deputies, along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Macon police, responded to the scene and surrounding area.

Law enforcement arrived at the scene and could still hear gunshots. They spoke with National Guard members who told them someone had shot through the windshield of the truck they were driving, causing shrapnel wounds to the driver’s face.

The bullet was believed to be lodged in the metal frame “A-post” in front of the driver, after going through the windshield.

The victim was taken to Samaritan Hospital and was later transferred to a Columbia hospital.

Law enforcement found a neighboring landowner who was sighting in his rifles next to the National Guard property. Authorities said the neighbor didn’t realize anything was going on even after the victim was injured. He allegedly continued to sight in his guns. Members of the National Guard said they heard 15-20 gunshots after the victim was injured. At the time, they didn’t know who was shooting and what that person was shooting at.

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.
